Now - or at some point in the future - your parents may need you to take care of them. Caring for your aging parents is one of the most important challenges you may ever face.
If you don't live nearby, occasional visits can give you an opportunity to evaluate your parents' changing needs. Keep this checklist from Easter Seals in mind on your next visit.
* Do your loved ones maintain an adequate diet? Review items in the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Food should be fresh and edible, items shouldn't be used past their expiration dates, and cupboards and shelves shouldn't be empty.
* Can they easily locate and take appropriate medication? Know what medications your parents should be taking on a regular basis. Peek into the medicine cabinet and look for prescriptions that are past their expiration dates.
* Is it safe for them to drive a car? Take a ride with your parent and pay particular attention to his or her speed; response to pedestrians, bicyclists and other drivers; attention to street signs and traffic signals; and attention to overall car maintenance.
* Are they able to properly maintain finances? Look for unpaid bills, overdue notices or duplicate payments.
* Do they generally maintain a safe and clean household? Survey the overall state of your parents' home. Is it in good shape and tidy?
